Key Challenge

The Shajiao Power Plant in Guangdong Province, China, wanted to reduce SO₂ emissions, reheat discharge gases before release to the atmosphere, and create a commercially saleable by-product of the scrubbing process.

Solution

Marsulex designed a system using our limestone/gypsum flue gas desulphurization (FGD) technology. The system utilizes pulverized limestone that is locally plentiful and inexpensive. Marsulex scrubber technology is used to absorb SO₂ from combustion gases, and our gypsum technology is used to produce the required by-product.

Results

• The project was completed on schedule.
• SO₂ emissions have been reduced by 95% and discharge gases are being reheated to 80 degrees Celsius, enhancing plume buoyancy.
• Operating costs are low due to plentiful, inexpensive limestone.
• Saleable by-product is used by the building materials industry, eliminating landfill requirements for alternatives.
