Petro-Canada and Shell Canada
- Montreal
Key Challenge
To comply with environmental regulations the Petro-Canada and Shell Canada refineries in Montreal must extract sulphur from their crude oil feedstock. The sulphur must be recovered in useable form and residual emissions of SO2 (tail gas) must be captured to ensure compliance.
Solution
Marsulex provides a totally outsourced solution whereby we own and operate the plant, which includes proprietary technology for the tail gas recovery unit. In 2006, a 50% expansion of the plant was completed without any interruption to our customers' operations.
Result
- The 2006 expansion enables the refineries to meet new on-road diesel sulphur regulations.
- The tail gas facility operates efficiently, raising total sulphur recovery to 99.9%.
- Economies of scale and operational improvements resulted in lower costs.
- Sales of added value by-product, sodium bisulphite, also lower overall costs of compliance.
