Key Challenge

To comply with environmental regulations the Petro-Canada and Shell Canada refineries in Montreal must extract sulphur from their crude oil feedstock. The sulphur must be recovered in useable form and residual emissions of SO₂ (tail gas) must be captured to ensure compliance.

Solution

Marsulex provides a totally outsourced solution whereby we own and operate the plant, which includes proprietary technology for the tail gas recovery unit. In 2006, a 50% expansion of the plant was completed without any interruption to our customers' operations.

Result

• The 2006 expansion enables the refineries to meet new on-road diesel sulphur regulations.
• The tail gas facility operates efficiently, raising total sulphur recovery to 99.9%.
• Economies of scale and operational improvements resulted in lower costs.
• Sales of added value by-product, sodium bisulphite, also lower overall costs of compliance.
